Slogik Drives In Six as Breakers Hold Off Tomcats, 10-8 in Eight Innings

The Southampton Breakers used a huge offensive performance from Nick Slogik (Rowan College at Gloucester) and withstood a late Riverhead rally to earn a 10-8 Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League victory over the Tomcats in eight innings.

Slogik was the difference at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI, while the Breakers pounded out 14 hits to improve to 18-11 on the season.

Southampton’s lineup produced offense throughout the game. Aidan Colasante (Harvard) scored three times and stole two bases, while Michael Caron (Assumption) went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sean Sailer (Villanova) added two hits, including a triple, and Brody Ruyle (Pomona-Pitzer) chipped in two hits and an RBI.

Riverhead kept pace early behind the long ball. Matt Hesselbirg (Mercy) connected for a two-run homer as the Tomcats stayed within striking distance, while Zach DeMilt (Adelphi) continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Breakers answered every challenge. Slogik delivered the game’s biggest blow with a three-run homer and continued to come through in key situations, driving in six of Southampton’s 10 runs. Caron added a pair of RBI, while Owen Beatrice (St. John’s) and Ruyle each contributed run-scoring hits.

On the mound, Brevin Bezick (Rowan College of Gloucester) provided the Breakers with four valuable innings of relief after starter Ashton Hammond 9Nichols) worked the opening two frames. Bezick allowed just one run despite issuing five walks, striking out six to keep Riverhead from mounting a comeback during the middle innings.

The Tomcats refused to go quietly. Riverhead drew nine walks and scored four runs in the seventh inning down to their last out to tie the game at 8-8 before Southampton took the lead in the eighth. DeMilt, Jack Byrne (Fairfield), Sam Leonard (Hofstra) and Thomas Iaquinto (Felician) all contributed to the rally.

With the momentum beginning to swing, Evan Gentile (Hartford) earned the victory despite a challenging seventh inning, and Daniel McDonnell (Roger Williams) shut the door with a scoreless eighth to record his second save of the season.

Eric Ressegger (Adelphi) kept Riverhead in the game with seven innings of work before Jacob Marcario took the loss after surrendering two runs in the eighth after Beatrice and Ruyle drove in the go-ahead runs for Southampton.
