Koch’s Walk-Off HR Lifts Westhampton to Victory against Sag Harbor

Behind a three-run walk-off HR by Nick Koch (Merrimack) the Westhampton Aviators completed a come back down two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Sag Harbor Whalers by a final score of 9-8 on Tuesday.

Westhampton took an early 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Brett Connolly (Washington (MD) got the scoring started for the Aviators with an RBI single. The Aviators would get their second run of the inning on an error that scored Oliver Kwan (Wesleyan). Tristan Gatchalian (SUNY Cortland) and Koch followed with RBI singles and the Aviators had a 4-0 lead after one inning.

Sag Harbor would get on the scoreboard in the top of the second with an RBI single from Carter Dickinson (Castleton) but Westhampton answered back in the bottom half of the inning with Galatchian’s second RBI for the day on a single to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Aviators.

The Whalers cut the deficit down to one run scoring three in the top of the third from a two-run double by Matteo Cubello (St. Anselm) and a wild pitch that scored Aaron Bock (Johns Hopkins).

Sag Harbor would tie the game in the top of the fifth when Bock reached on an error Finley Holmes (Palm Beach Atlantic). Westhampton would get the lead back in the bottom half of the fifth when an error on a pickoff attempt resulted in Garrett Mathias (Bucknell) scoring to give the Aviators a 6-5 lead.

The Whalers took the lead from Westhampton in the sixth scoring three runs. Luis Takeshi Saito Miyajima tied the game with an RBI single and soon after bases loaded walks to Collin Harty (Nichols) and Bock gave the Whalers an 8-6 lead going to the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh with one on and one out, Ryan Kiendle (Wilmington) ripped a double putting the tying runs in scoring position as Koch stepped up to the plate.

Koch would take a 1-2 pitch deep giving Westhampton (6-4) the walk-off victory in Sag Harbor and put them a game back of the Whalers (7-3) in first place in the HCBL standings.
