Southampton 7, North Fork 3

The Southampton Breakers erased an early three-run deficit with a pair of home runs and strong relief pitching to defeat the North Fork Ospreys 7-3 on Tuesday in Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League action.

North Fork jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning after taking advantage of a Southampton error. Tristan Govea (Felician) lined a single through the left side to score Sincere Lozano (Lemoyne Owen) which put the Ospreys ahead 1-0. Moments later, Max Doninger (St. Peter’s) delivered a two-run single up the middle, bringing home Govea and Carter Heagle to extend the North Fork lead to 3-0.

The Ospreys held that advantage until the fourth inning when Southampton’s offense came alive.

Nick Slogik (Rowan College at Gloucester) got the Breakers on the board in dramatic fashion, launching a two-run home run that scored Michael Caron (Assumption) and cut the deficit to 3-2. Later in the inning, Luke Ciminiello (Stony Brook) tied the game with an RBI groundout that plated Chase Jones (West Chester), and Vic Patel (Wallace CC) followed with an RBI single to right field to score Aidan Colsante (Harvard) and give Southampton its first lead of the game at 4-3.

The Breakers added some breathing room in the fifth inning when Chase Jones crushed a two-run home run, scoring Slogik and extending Southampton’s advantage to 6-3.

Southampton added its final run in the sixth inning when Hector Francia lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Patel to score and pushing the lead to 7-3.

After allowing three runs, two earned, over the first four innings, Southampton’s pitching staff shut the door. Starter Luke Raho (West Chester) improved to 2-0 on the season after scattering seven hits while striking out four. Owen Callaghan (Holy Cross) was dominant in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, and Charles Stricker (West Chester) closed out the final four outs to earn his first save of the season.

Southampton managed just five hits but made them count, with two of those hits leaving the ballpark. Slogik finished with two RBI on his fourth-inning homer, while Jones also drove in two with his fifth-inning blast. Patel added an RBI single and scored twice in the victory.

Shelter Island 9, Riverhead 1

The Shelter Island Bucks used aggressive baserunning, timely hitting, and a dominant pitching performance from Sam Lowenstein to defeat the Riverhead Tomcats 9-1 on Tuesday in Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League action.

Shelter Island wasted no time taking control of the game, scoring three runs in the opening inning without recording an extra-base hit. After Sam Ametrano (Quinnipiac) reached base and moved into scoring position, Cayden Van Dolah (Holy Cross) stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher that also allowed Ametrano to score. Moments later, Van Dolah stole home as David Swift (Bates) swiped second base, giving the Bucks a 2-0 lead. Pearson Dodds (St. Lawrence) capped the inning with an RBI single to left-center field that scored Swift and extended the advantage to 3-0.

Riverhead got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Matt Hesselbirg (Mercy) grounded out to second base, bringing home Richie Heyder (Farmingdale State) which trimmed the deficit to 3-1.

The Bucks answered immediately with a four-run second inning that put the game firmly in their control. Van Dolah delivered an RBI single to score JD Stemhagen (Dickinson) before Swift lined a two-run double to right field, plating Van Dolah and Sam Ametrano. Ethan Harris (St. Lawrence) followed with an RBI single to score Swift and push the Shelter Island lead to 7-1.

After several scoreless innings, the Bucks added insurance runs in the sixth. Sam Bradford (UMass Dartmouth) singled to left-center field to score Ametrano, and Dodds followed with his second RBI single of the game, bringing home Van Dolah to make it 9-1.

That was more than enough support for Shelter Island starter Sam Lowenstein (Colby), who turned in one of the best pitching performances of the HCBL season. Lowenstein tossed six innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven and not issuing a walk. He improved to 2-1 on the season while throwing an efficient 77 pitches.

Michael Myers (Occidental) worked a scoreless seventh inning to close out the victory.

The Bucks’ offense was led by Van Dolah, who scored three runs, drove in another, and wreaked havoc on the bases. Swift continued his outstanding season by going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Dodds collected two RBI on a pair of singles. Ametrano also scored three times in the victory.

Westhampton 5, Sag Harbor 3

The Westhampton Aviators struck early and then relied on strong pitching to hold off the Sag Harbor Whalers for a 5-3 victory Tuesday night at Longwood Youth Sports Association in Yaphank.

Westhampton wasted little time taking control of the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Antonio Belgrove (Saleh State) opened the rally and came around to score when Danny Nawrocki (Bucknell) ripped an RBI double to left field. Brett Connolly (Washington (MD) followed with an RBI triple to left, and Nick Koch (Merrimack) capped the inning with an RBI single to give the Aviators a 3-0 advantage.

Sag Harbor chipped away at the deficit in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Westhampton miscue as Milo Suarez (Dartmouth) scored an unearned run to make it a 3-1 game.

The Whalers pulled within a run in the top of the fifth when Finley Holmes (Palm Beach Atlantic) delivered a two-run single to shortstop to tie the game at 3-3.

The Aviators responded immediately in the bottom half of the fifth. Brady Green (Bucknell) came through with an RBI single to right field that scored Koch, extending the lead to 4-2.

Westhampton added an important insurance run in the sixth inning when Koch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home Christian Cox (Framingham State) and pushing the advantage to 5-2.

On the mound, Dylan Beirne (Adelphi) earned his first victory of the season for the Aviators, working five innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. He struck out six and did not issue a walk. Ryan Kiendle (Wilmington) slammed the door over the final two innings, retiring the Whalers without allowing a hit while striking out two to record his first save of the season.

Kris Vinski (St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) provided solid relief for Sag Harbor, tossing 4.2 innings while allowing two runs on seven hits after Braeden Mott surrendered three first-inning runs in taking the loss.
