Riverhead 7, Westhampton 4

The Riverhead Tomcats jumped out to an early six-run lead and held off a late rally by the Westhampton Aviators to earn a 7-4 victory Thursday night at Longwood Youth Sports Association in Yaphank.

Riverhead wasted little time taking control of the game in the opening inning. Bryan McCleary (Adelphi) put the Tomcats on the board with an RBI single to right field that scored Jack Byrne (Fairfield), and Jagger Adamo (Bryant) followed with an RBI double to left field, bringing home McCleary to make it 2-0.

The Tomcats continued to pour on the offense in the second inning. Byrne grounded out to shortstop to score Sam Leonard (Hofstra), Joey Cohen (Post) followed with an RBI single to right that plated Kevin Schnupp (UMass Amherst), and McCleary capped the three-run frame with another RBI single, scoring Dylan Kennedy-Fujah (UMass Boston) extending the lead to 5-0.

Riverhead added another run in the third when Byrne singled to left field to score Leonard after a Westhampton error helped keep the inning alive, pushing the advantage to 6-0.

The Aviators finally broke through in the bottom of the third. Brady Green (Bucknell) singled home Antonio Belgrove (Salem State), and later in the inning, Nick Koch (Merrimack) would score, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

Westhampton continued to chip away in the fourth inning when Brett Connolly (Washington (MD) singled to first base, driving in Frank Kentoffio to make it a 6-3 game.

The Tomcats answered immediately in the fifth. McCleary delivered his third RBI hit of the evening, singling to right field to score Schnupp and restoring Riverhead’s four-run cushion at 7-3.

The Aviators scored their final run in the sixth inning when Frank Kentoffio (Brookdale CC) doubled to bring home Riley Reimund (St. Lawrence), but they would get no closer as Riverhead’s bullpen closed out the victory.

Josh Polanco (Molloy) earned the win for the Tomcats, improving to 2-2 after throwing 3.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three. Starter John Parpis (Felician) battled through 3.1 innings, surrendering three runs despite issuing eight walks and hitting two batters.

Riverhead collected 12 hits in the victory, led by BMcCleary’s three-hit, three-RBI performance. Byrne added two hits and two RBIs, while Cohen and Adamo each contributed run-scoring hits as the Tomcats built a lead that proved too much for the Aviators to overcome. Despite drawing 12 walks, Westhampton managed just four hits in the loss.

Southampton 10, Sag Harbor 4

The Southampton Breakers erased an early three-run deficit and pulled away late for a 10-4 victory over the Sag Harbor Whalers on Thursday in a key Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League matchup.

Sag Harbor struck first with a three-run second inning, taking advantage of a pair of Southampton miscues. Aaron Vetter (Palm Beach Atlantic) started the scoring with an RBI single to shortstop that brought home Nicholas Banner (Tufts). Anthony Sarro (Fairleigh Dickinson) followed with an RBI double through the right side, scoring Thomas Shaw (Castleton), and Milo Suarez (Dartmouth) capped the rally with an RBI groundout to give the Whalers a 3-0 lead.

Southampton answered immediately in the bottom of the second when Aidan Colsante (Harvard) singled through the left side to score Sean Sailer, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Breakers seized control in the third inning. Chase Jones (West Chester) singled home Hector Francia (St. John’s) to pull Southampton within a run before Liam Daly (Holy Cross) delivered the biggest hit of the game, ripping a three-run double to center field that scored Zach Khozozian (Harvard), Sailer, and Jones to put the Breakers ahead 5-3.

Sag Harbor got a run back in the fifth when Tim McGrath (Tufts) singled through the left side to score Collin Harty (Nichols), trimming the lead to 5-4. However, Southampton answered in the bottom half of the inning when Luke Ciminiello (Stony Brook) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home Chase Jones to restore the two-run advantage.

The Breakers broke the game open in the sixth inning. Michael Caron (Assumption) scored on a balk to make it 7-4, and Sailer followed with a two-run single to left field, driving in Chase Jones and Alex Apicella (Rowan College at Gloucester). Colsante added another RBI single later in the inning, pushing the lead to 10-4.

Southampton starter Isaac Scavarda (Hillsdale) earned the victory, improving to 2-1 after allowing three runs, none earned, on five hits over four innings while striking out five. Scavarda’s Hillsdale teammate Collin Tobin bridged the middle innings, and Ryan Morash (SUNY Maritime) closed the game with two scoreless innings of relief to record his first save of the season. Griffin Rampoldt took the loss for Sag Harbor. Southampton capitalized with runners on base in the game having nine walks and four hit batters.

Daly led the Southampton offense with three RBIs, while Sailer and Colsante each drove in two runs.

Shelter Island 5, North Fork 4

The Shelter Island Bucks continued their mid-season surge on Thursday night, winning their fifth consecutive game with a 5-4 victory over the North Fork Ospreys.

North Fork struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Max Doninger (St. Peter’s) lined an RBI double, scoring Nick Porrello (Manhattanville) to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead.

The Bucks answered in the fifth inning thanks to the long ball. Connor McGill (Point Lona Nazarene) stepped to the plate with Miguel Reich (Dickinson)aboard and launched a two-run home run, giving Shelter Island its first lead of the night at 2-1.

Shelter Island added crucial insurance runs in the sixth inning. David Swift (Bates) continued his productive season with an RBI double that scored Sam Ametrano (Quinnipiac) and moved Cayden Van Dolah (Holy Cross) to third. Later in the inning, Jack Pitman (Bentley) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that plated both Swift and Van Dolah, extending the Bucks’ advantage to 5-1.

The Ospreys mounted a late rally in the seventh. Manny Carreras (Pace) delivered a two-run double that scored Doninger and Rocco Cimino (Pace), cutting the deficit to 5-3. North Fork added another run on a sacrifice fly by Sincere Lozano (Lemoyne Owen) that brought home Carreras, trimming the lead to just one run. However after the play, Eli Sitzer was thrown out attempting to steal second. Michael Myers (Occidential) would get the final out of the inning working out of the jam and preserving the win for the Bucks.

Brennan Shapiro (Babson) earned the victory for Shelter Island, improving to 2-1 after pitching six innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking four and striking out one. Myers recorded his second save of the season.
