A New Chapter — Clippers Transition to Riverhead Tomcats
The Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League is entering a new era this summer, and one of the most exciting developments is the return of a familiar and respected name: the Riverhead Tomcats.
After a successful run that included a championship last season, the South Shore Clippers have been rebranded as the Tomcats, bringing new energy while reconnecting with a proud piece of the league’s history. This transition isn’t about closing a chapter, it’s about building on it.
The Tomcats were one of the league’s cornerstone franchises during its early expansion years and quickly established themselves as a competitive and well-respected organization. Their return strengthens the league both on and off the field, especially as the HCBL continues to grow across Eastern Long Island.
Riverhead has always represented more than just a team. It’s a community-based program with deep roots and a track record of developing high-level talent. One of the most notable players to come through the Tomcats program is former National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, a reminder of the caliber of athletes who have worn the uniform.
From a league standpoint, bringing the Tomcats back into the fold also creates important balance geographically. With games played at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, the HCBL now has a stronger presence on the North Fork, providing flexibility in scheduling and helping ease congestion during peak summer events across the South Fork.
More importantly, it opens the door for deeper engagement with the Riverhead community. The league’s model has always depended on local support, from host families to fans in the stands, and the return of the Tomcats presents an opportunity to reestablish those connections.
This isn’t a restart, it’s a continuation. The identity, the history, and the expectations that come with the Tomcats name are back, and they bring with them a renewed sense of purpose.
As the season approaches, the focus is clear: build a strong roster, reconnect with the community, and carry forward a legacy that has already produced championship-level baseball and elite talent.
