Ospreys Explode for Six-Run First Inning Against Riverhead
The North Fork Ospreys wasted no time making a statement on Independence Day, erupting for six runs in the first inning and cruising to a 9-3 victory over the Riverhead Tomcats.
With the win, North Fork improved to 8-12 on the season, pulling into a tie with Riverhead and moving both clubs to within one game of fourth place in the HCBL Standings which is currently held by the Shelter Island Bucks (9-11).
The Ospreys’ offense came alive immediately against Riverhead starter Tyler Lopez (SUNY New Paltz). Bradyn Thompson (Bates) scored the game’s first run on an RBI single by Manny Carreras (Pace) before Justin Pierre (American International) followed with an RBI single of his own. Andrew Baay (Middlebury) then added another run-scoring hit to make it 3-0.
The big blow came moments later when Carter Heagle (Merrimack) launched a three-run home run, scoring Baay and Pierre to cap a stunning six-run opening frame and give North Fork a commanding early advantage.
Riverhead finally got on the board in the third inning when Matthew Ryan (Adelphi) scored on an RBI single to right field by Richie Heyder (Farmingdale State), trimming the deficit to 6-1. However, North Fork answered immediately in the bottom half. Nicolas Martini (Eastern Connecticut St.) crossed the plate during a rundown following a caught stealing by Pierre, extending the lead to 7-1.
The Ospreys added another run in the fifth when Heagle grounded out to shortstop, bringing home Pierre to make it 8-1.
Riverhead mounted a brief rally in the sixth inning as Ryan delivered a two-run double to cut the deficit to 8-3. But North Fork answered one final time in the bottom of the inning when Martini doubled and drove in Gianni Generoso (SUNY Westchester CC) to restore the six-run cushion.
North Fork pounded out 14 hits in the victory. Heagle led the way with four RBI, highlighted by his first-inning three-run homer and fifth-inning RBI groundout. Pierre finished with three hits and two runs scored, while Martini collected three hits, scored twice, and drove in a run. Carreras added two hits and an RBI, and Baay chipped in with a pair of hits and a run batted in.
On the mound, Eddie Torres (Post) turned in a strong performance for the Ospreys, allowing just one run on two hits over five innings while striking out five to earn his third victory of the season. Sincere Lozano (Lemoyne-Owen) closed out the final two innings despite Riverhead’s late push.
For the Tomcats, Ryan drove in two runs and Heyder added the club’s only other RBI, but Riverhead managed just three hits and struck out six times.
Both teams are on the road Sunday as the Ospreys travel to Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor to play the Whalers while the Tomcats meet the Westhampton Aviators at the Eastport Athletic Complex.
