Sarro Hits Second Extra Inning Walk-Off HR of the Season for Sag Harbor vs. Shelter Island
For the second time in six days, Anthony Sarro (Fairleigh Dickinson) hit a walk-off home run for the Sag Harbor Whalers in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Shelter Island Bucks. Sarro hit a walk-off grand slam on Sunday, June 14th for the Whalers against Shelter Island and on Friday with the score tied at 2-2, Sarro hit a solo shot to win the game for Sag Harbor by a score of 3-2.
The game saw a pitcher’s duel between starters Brennan Shapiro (Babson) of Shelter Island and Kris Vinski (St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) of Sag Harbor as the game was scoreless through the first six innings.
Shelter Island would break the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh when JD Stemhagen (Dickinson) hit an RBI single for the game’s first run. Evan Clark (New Haven) followed with an RBI groundout that scored Cayden Van Dolah (Holy Cross) giving the Bucks a 2-0 lead.
Shelter Island had a chance to break the game open with two runners in scoring position with two out but Ethan Righter (Hamilton) would get out of the jam for Sag Harbor as the game went to the bottom of the seventh.
Shapiro would come back out for the bottom of the seventh with a chance for the complete game win but would give up two runs on an error that scored Finley Holmes (Palm Beach Atlantic) and an RBI single from Nicholas Banner (Tufts) as the game was tied at 2-2 going into the eighth and final inning.
Righter ran into trouble in the top of the eighth allowing a single to Lucas Ametrano (Holy Cross) and a walk to Van Dolah with two outs. Righter would get Xavier Hall (Emerson) to fly out to center field sending the game to the bottom of the eighth.
Sam Ametrano (Quinnipiac) would come in to pitch in relief of Shapiro for the Bucks and would face Sarro to start the bottom of the eighth. Sarro would take the first pitch Ametrano threw deep as Sarro would get his second walk-off of the week for the Whalers as they improved their record to 6-1 on the season.
The Whalers travel to Southampton on Saturday to play the Breakers while the Bucks try to break a five-game losing streak against the Riverhead Tomcats in Calverton.
