Siano’s Two-Run Homer Lifts North Fork Past Southampton in Regular-Season Finale

The North Fork Ospreys rebounded from a suspended-game loss to the Shelter Island Bucks earlier in the day, defeating the Southampton Breakers 2-1 to close the regular season at Southampton High School.

With the win, North Fork finished the regular season at 14-17-2 and will play as the No. 5 seed in the HCBL playoffs. The Ospreys will travel to face the No. 4 Sag Harbor Whalers in Friday’s Wild Card game. Despite the loss, Southampton finished with the league’s best record at 19-14 and earned the No. 1 seed, advancing directly to Saturday’s semifinal where the Breakers will host the lowest-seeded Wild Card winner.

Southampton struck first in the opening inning without recording a hit. Hector Francia (St. John’s) stole third base and eventually came home on a throwing error to give the Breakers a 1-0 advantage.

North Fork answered in the second inning with one swing of the bat. After Andrew Baay reached base, Mike Siano (St. Lawrence) crushed a two-run homer to right-center field, putting the Ospreys in front 2-1. The blast proved to be the difference.

That was all the support North Fork starter Sadier Vicioso (Felician) needed. Vicioso turned in four strong innings, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out six and walking four to earn the victory.

The Breakers threatened throughout the game but could never find the tying run. Tristan Govea (Felician) followed with two scoreless innings of relief, surrendering three hits while striking out two, before Bradyn Thompson (Bates) slammed the door in the seventh. Thompson struck out both batters he faced to record his first save of the season.

Southampton’s pitching staff kept the game close after Siano’s homer. Starter Isaac Scavarda (Hillsdale) worked 1 2/3 innings before Owen Callaghan (Holy Cross) allowed the decisive home run while striking out two over 2 1/3 innings. Collin Tobin (Hillsdale) and Evan Gentile (Hartford) combined to keep North Fork off the scoreboard over the final three innings.
